Four separate train platform staircases, located at a major east coast airport, had failed coating systems that were flaking and chipping away. These staircases are used by thousands of airline passengers daily and slips were becoming routine.

The local ENECON Field Engineering Specialist was contacted to provide a solution. The staircases needed a very durable coating system that would handle thousands of passengers and their luggage daily. The stairs are semi enclosed and subject to moisture from underneath.

ENECLAD WBC, ENECON’s breathable, high performance polymer composite floor protection system was chosen.

After building a custom canopy to control dust, the surface was prepared by grinding off the previous failed coating. Since power washing was not an option with all of the passengers in the area, the staircase was vacuumed and wiped down with alcohol after grinding. The first coat of WBC was applied, then a fine aggregate was broadcast and back rolled in to add slip resistant properties before the second coat of WBC was applied.

Each staircase was back in service after four days, much to the delight of the customer. Not only did this project come in under budget, but it was completed two and a half weeks sooner than the next closest competitor’s bid proposal.

ENECLAD® WBC is a water based, two component coating system that has been specifically designed to seal and protect concrete surfaces that may experience moisture problems. For more information about ENECLAD WBC please visit: ENECLAD® WBC
